Plot
This series takes place sometime during the 1990s (only addressed as "199X" ) on the Earth Ship, the command center of an international defence agency called Sky Force. It is the guardian of peace on Earth. In the ship, scientists have developed "Birdonic Waves", a newly developed technology which gives the subject superhuman abilities. Experiments (called "J-Project") were successful. Aya Odagiri, the director of the project, chose five elite Sky Force officials from Earth to use this technology. Ryu Tendoh, one of the Sky Force officers, was successfully exposed to the Birdonic waves, making him Jetman Number 1, the Red Hawk. However, the Earth Ship is suddenly attacked by Vyram, an evil space organization. They successfully destroy the ship, and the remaining Birdonic waves (for the four other officials) become scattered on Earth. Four civilians pick them up. Odagiri and Tendoh successfully escape the ship and begin searching on earth for the four remaining Jetman waves in order to stop Vyram's plans of conquering our dimension.
Jetman - Ryu Tendoh (天堂 竜, Tendō Ryū?)/Red Hawk (レッドホーク, Reddo Hōku?)
He is originally a Sky Forcer codenamed "W6" and leader of the Jetman. Being the only official to become a Jetman, his policy is to be always professional and never let feelings affect himself in battle, which is the primary reason of why he and Gai fought in many episodes like Ken and Joe in Gatchaman. This comes to a conflict when he discovers that his beloved Rie had become the Vyram officer Maria, which later caused Gai's inner sense of justice to awaken during the time he fantasized he was still with Rie. He does not drink alcohol but loves hot milk without sugar, but ironically drank with his former rival turned best friend Gai in one episode. He married his fellow Jetman and support in difficult times Kaori in the series finale, despite his undying love for Rie. He is often wearing Red Gold's Gym gloves. - Age: 26 years old
- Ryu is known as Réno in France
- Attacks: Wing Punch (ウイングパンチ, Uingu Panchi?)
- Gai Yuuki (結城 凱, Yūki Gai?)/Black Condor (ブラックコンドル, Burakku Kondoru?)
A loner who hates being ordered around. He loves fighting but is really a nice guy. Initially clashed with Ryu but eventually became friends. His interests include motorcycle, saxophone, gambling and womanizing. He loves Kaori, and often tries to flirt with her, without results, which ends up on him suffering from the frustration of his unanswered feelings. When she finally accepts him, they have frequent problems on their relationship as both are too different. In a completely random act of violence, he is stabbed to death by a thug three years after the fall of Vyram on his way to Ryu and Kaori's wedding while trying to recover a woman's purse, but managed to keep the others from knowing and found time to smoke a bit of cigarette before dying. He loves the Macallan, Scotch whisky. He hates men and natto. Gai's fighting style is a street fighting and martial arts mix: his combat skills match Ryu's, though he is the dirty type, as sometimes grabs his foe in the crotch to perform an overhead lift and toss. His character appears to be largely based on Gatchaman's Joe Asakura, although Gai's death seems senseless and random in comparison to Joe having fallen honorably in battle. - Age: 25 years old
- Gai is known as Galt in France
- Attacks: Condor Finish (コンドルフィニッシュ, Kondoru Finisshu?), Flying Kick, Condor/Owl Towering Attack
- Raita Ooishi (大石 雷太, Ōishi Raita?)/Yellow Owl (イエローオウル, Ierō Ōru?)
A nature lover who enjoys vegetables and hates Vyram for their destruction of nature. He is good at cooking. He looks after Kaori and has feelings for her. The only member who wears eyeglasses and only out-of-shape member in Jetman. (This is the result of a recurring theme in Sentai being an overweight yet physically strong male yellow member.) Three years after Vyram is defeated, runs a farm with his childhood friend, Satsuki. He was raised by his grandmother, Kiyo Ooishi, because Raita's parents were busy. As Yellow Owl, specializes in raw strength techniques like head-butts, body blows, throwing techniques, and sumo-based attacks. He is also able to hurl boulders. - Age: 22 years old
- Raita is known as Rénato in France
- Attacks: Rock Drop (岩石落とし, Ganseki Otoshi?), Deadly Thrust (必殺つっぱり, Hissatsu Tsuppari?), Condor/Owl Towering Attack (コンドルオウルタワーリングアタック, Kondoru Ōru Tawāringu Atakku?), Double Kick (with White Swan)
- Kaori Rokumeikan (鹿鳴館 香, Rokumeikan Kaori?)/White Swan (ホワイトスワン, Howaito Suwan?)
She is the only heiress of the Rokumeikan Enterprises empire. She is taken care of by her butler, Jiiya, since her parents live in New York. She joined the Jetman to escape the boredom of her heiress life. She is good at Kendo and best shot in Jetman, Kaori learned in battle and in the middle of a love triangle with Ryu and Gai what a spoiled rich girl she was and what the really important things were. Raita also had feelings for her. She does sometimes use her wealth to help the team like when she used a lot of diamonds to try and snap Ako from the curse of the monster Red Diamond. At the end of the series she marries Ryu. - Age: 22 years old
- Attacks: Swan Wing (スワンウィング, Suwan Wingu?), Swannie Attack (スワニーアタック, Suwanī Atakku?), Double Kick (ダブルキック, Daburu Kikku?) (with Yellow Owl)
- Ako Hayasaka (早坂 アコ, Hayasaka Ako?)/Blue Swallow (ブルースワロー, Burū Suwarō?)
A senior at Miharakita High School. A bright and cheery girl who wants to marry a rich man. She called Choukan Odagiri "Granny". She first thought of Jetman as a part time job paying ¥1500 (roughly $12.89) an hour, but her first battle awakened her sense of justice and made her realize that she must fight as a warrior (for free, no questions asked). She is best friends with her classmate, Kyouko. She debuts as an idol singer three years after the fall of Vyram. - Age: 18 years old
- Ako is known as Anne in France
- Attacks: Swallow Dash (スワローダーッシュ, Suwarō Dāsshu?)
- Jeffrey Kensaki (ジェフリィ・剣崎, Jefurii Kensaki?)/Green Eagle (グリーンイーグル, Gurīn Īguru?)
A musician who takes over for Gai in the somewhat non-canon (for the TV series) manga epilogue since it was never shown on TV. Since Ako is then an idol singer, Jeff is an eager fan of her. He takes a major role in the final battle. Golds Gym International, Inc. ...

Its other weapons are the Shot Puncher (ショットパンチャー, Shotto Panchā?), Ícaros Axe (イカロスアックス, Icaros Akkusu?), Ícaros Magna (イカロスマグナ, Ikarosu Maguna?), Jet Lancer (ジェットランサー, Jetto Ransā?), Jet Dagger (ジェットダガー, Jetto Dagā?), and the Wing Shield (ウィングシールド, Wingu Shīrudo?). It can reform into the Ícaros Haken (イカロスハーケン, Ikarosu Hāken?) when the command of "Fusion! Jet Scram" (合体! ジェットスクラム, Gattai! Jet Garuda" (変形! ジェットガルーダ, Henkei! Jetto Garūda?) is given, the cockpit of the Bird Garuda forms the head, the tailfins become the back, the rear intakes become the feet, and the forward engines are the shoulders (the forearms and lower legs slide back). It forms the headdress, body (with Jet Hawk as the center), forearms, and lower legs of the Great Ícaros and attaches to the rear of the Ícaros Haken to form the Hyper Haken. It is armed with the Dia Blizzard (ダイヤブリザード, Daiya Burizādo?), Wing Slasher (ウィングスラッシャー, Wingu Surasshā?), GarudSearcher (ガルドサーチャー, GarudoSāchā?) and the Garuda Burst (ガルーダバースト, Garūda Bāsuto?). The first female commander of Sentai. She is good at martial arts, and the inventor of mecha. She can be both caring and severe to the Jetman. The more important thing to her is the life of her underlings, so much that she is willing to fight in the line of fire if necessary. Her subordinates call her "Chōkan". She pilots the Jet Garuda when necessary such as the final battle. Others - Back Dimension Dimensian Warriors (裏次元ディメンシアンの戦士, Ura Jigen Dimenshia no Senshi?) - The last three warriors of Dimensia (ディメンシア, Dimenshia?), a realm destroyed by Vyram. In the sequel manga they are shown repowered and in charge of protecting Japan after the original Jetman's powers have faded over time. Ultimately they make way for the true Jetman once again. Dimensional War Party Vyram The Dimensional War Party Vyram (次元戦団バイラム, Jigen Sendan Bairamu?) conquered many worlds in the Back Dimension, now moving on to Front Dimension, ours. They despise humans and see them as stupid and worthless. Their base of operations was the Vylock (バイロック, Bairokku?), a brain-shaped castle capable of traversing dimensions. After their leader got lost in the Back Dimension, its four leading members compete to defeat Jetmen with the prize being full-leadership. - Back Dimensional Count Radiguet (裏次元伯爵ラディゲ, Urajigen Hakushaku Radige?): A cold-hearted officer who is the nearest presence to a leader of Vyram and will do anything to accomplish his goals, even help Jetman themselves. The concealed half of his face is ancient while the other is youthful. He would not acknowledge anyone who stands above him so had a terrible grudge against Toranza who overpowered him. Radiguet wields the Demon Sword Bloody Gate (魔剣ブラディゲート, Maken Buradi Gēto?) and can transform into the monster Radigan (ラディガン, Radigan?) when enraged. He absorbed Robot Veronica's energy to power himself up so he could defeat Toranza to become Vyram's leader. Ultimately, he fuses with Vylock to become the giant monster Raguem (ラゲム, Ragemu?) whose armor could not be penetrated by any weapon. Near the finale, Rie, having been released from Radiguet's control, stabbed him on the back, at which point Radiguet knew that he lost her forever, and preferred to kill her instead of "...give you to Red Hawk". The stab on Radiguet's back was the only weak spot in Raguem's armor, so the Jet Ícaros attacked there with the Birdonic Saber, and fatally wounded Radiguet who, cursing the Jetman and swearing revenge, was defeated. Though his body had disappeared, Radiguet's soul endured and possessed Tranza's body years later in the manga. He used Ryu and Kaori's daughter to fight for him until he was defeated by Gai's replacement, Green Eagle. Radiguet was going to use Jeff as his new body, but Toranza held Radiguet at bay as the two died in an explosion. Some fans believe that the thug that stabbed Gai was actually Radiguet in human form without his powers.

In addition to his psychokinetic powers, and newfound arrogant nature, he wields the Boltoranza (ボルトランザ, Borutoranza?) longsword. But after being defeated by the Jetman in final combat as a result of Radiguet's trickery, he ended up becoming a vegetable in a mental institution and what becomes in him in the canon is unknown. Though he was only surviving member by the series finale, Toranza became a new vessel for Radiguet's soul in the non-canon epilogue manga which at the end, depicted Tranza sacrificing himself to destroy Radiguet once and for all in an act of vengeance.
- Maria (マリア, Maria?, 1-49): She was formerly known as Rie Aoi (藍リエ, Aoi Rie?), Sky Forcer W3, 22 years old, very skilled at piano and love interest of Ryu Tendoh. Had a relationship with Grey after he protected her during the fight to get back Kaori and Ako who had been turned into a photograph by Camera Jigen (カメラジゲン, Kamerajigen?). Always played piano music for Grey despite not knowing how she knew this music.Near the end of the series Radiguet implants a parasite on her body to increase her power, but it turns her into a vampiric creature. She was slain by Radiguet after reverting to Rie, before dying she managed to back-stab him with a sword which allowed the Jet Ícaros to finally kill him with the same maneuver. Grey is Gai's rival, and in episode 50, they battled in a last duel. Grey lost, but Gai approached him before Grey died, and lit him one last cigarette as a sign of acknowledgment as a worthy rival.
