Chris Jones is the creator of the popular freeware game creation program, Adventure Game Studio, otherwise known as AGS for short. Thought of as "a god" by certain members of the AGS community, he has allegedly gained a somewhat cultlike following. Freeware (also called gratis software or free as in free beer software) is computer software which is made available free of charge and is not necessarily free to be used, copied, studied, modified and redistributed. ... The AGS Logo and Mascot, the Blue Cup Adventure Game Studio is a freeware tool that can be used to create both free and commercial graphical adventure games. ...
ChrisJones: AGS is programmed in C, because it's the language that I know best and is also probably the language that generates the fastest code at present.
ChrisJones: Well, I haven't used AGAST or IndyJava extensively so I may be wrong here -- but as far as I know neither of them comes with an IDE for developing games -- it all has to be done with their scripting language.
AGS does have an IDE, however one of its current problems is that the Windows port of the engine is relatively new and still has some quirky bugs, whereas the other engines were designed for Windows from the start.
AGS was originally written and released in 1997 as an MS-DOS program entitled "Adventure Creator".
Jones was inspired by the apparent simplicity of Sierra On-Line's adventure game interface, specifically as showcased in Space Quest IV: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers.
AGS Awards: The most prestigious award of the AGS community, the AGS Awards (also very rarely known as the "Rogers") are a series of annual awards similar to the Oscars voted on by the AGS community.
