In 1997, he left the software field to concentrate on dyslexia correction and research. Since 2000, he has focused exclusively on studying and writing about molecular manufacturing. Phoenix, who lives in Miami, Florida, is a published author in nanotechnology and nanomedical research. He is best-known for his peer-reviewed paper, Design of a Primitive Nanofactory, as well as his comprehensive outline for Thirty Essential Nanotechnology Studies. Phoenix has authored or co-authored many papers and essays in connection with his work for CRN. Reason Magazine - Nanotechnology: Hell or Heaven? (1855 words)
Chris Phoenix, director of research for the Center for Responsible Nanotechnology, talked about "Clean Molecular Manufacturing," whose slogan could be "No Atom Left Behind." Nanotech manufacturing means doing chemistry mechanically—building products with each atom precisely placed, in which all molecular bonds are strong enough to survive at room temperature.
Chris Phoenix worried about tensions between consumers and corporations since "the value of nanotech products is 1000 times greater than their manufacturing costs." Evidently, he believes that corporations will try to push the prices of their products up to obtain super high profits.
Phoenix also notes, "Any unrestricted nanofactory could become a WMD factory." (A restricted nanofactory would be one that can produce only certified pre-programmed designs.) In a nano world, it would be incredibly hard to find out what other countries are doing and/or verifying treaty commitments when it comes to weapons.
