Tomlin was born and raised in Grand Saline, Texas. His father taught him to play the guitar and growing up he played mostly country music. At 14, he wrote his first worship song. He entered college planning to study medicine, but according to him God had a different plan for his life. After college, he played and wrote songs and in 1997, Louie Giglio asked Tomlin if he would be interested in Passion. He agreed, and he has played a key role ever since.
