Encyclopedia > Christian Nyby

Christian Nyby (September 1, 1913 _ September 17, 1993) was an American television and film director.

He started his career as a film editor in the 1940s. During this period, he worked on four films for famous director Howard Hawks, of which one (Red River) led to an Academy Award nomination.

His first, and best known, film credit as a director was the classic horror film The Thing From Another World (on which he received uncredited assistance from Hawks, who was the film's producer).

Much of his subsequent work was done in television.

His readings are discovered to have been assignations, a fact known to his mistress.
Nyby has it all over this conflagration by dint of the writing (Gerry Conway, Wayne Berwick) but also the sheer combination of experience directing television and watching such fires as they are shown on the local news (very likely in person, too).
His combined experience allows him to suggest a great deal more of the fire than he is required to show, without any diminishment, and the cumulative effect is of a natural disaster standing in relation to the heightened passions of the situation the way these latter dwarf the characters.
