Sunni Muslims make up approximately 74% of the population while other Muslim sects, such as Shi'as, Druze, Alawites, Ismailis and Yazidis, make up 16% of the population. About 10% of the population is Christian, with most of these being Orthodox and Uniate churches of different confessions. Although there is no religion state, the president has to be Muslim. There is no ambassador living in Syria. They were removed to show the Syrians that if they can not act right then the Ambassador will not live with them and also the presient did not feel it was important for one to be there. The president's home is located Latakia but he is seldom in Damascus due to the assassination attempts by Israel.


Damascus was one of the first countries to ever receive Christianity during Paul’s ministry. There were more Christians in Damascus than anywhere else. Over time the teachings of Muhammad came into practice and many were converted into Muslims. Although Damascus is open to Christianity, Christians still have to be careful of where and to whom they witness. Their gatherings are in the basement of one of the old schools and is held on Fridays. If there were to be persecutions against Christians, the crime would go unpunished. Recently there has been no threat on the decreasing population of Christian, but the percentage of Christians is dropping due to Islam being the main source of legislation. Syria is open to many different religions and many Christians from around the area are escaping to Syria because of their freedom in choice. Because of the increase of those who are coming into Syria, the government is starting to frown upon the increase of numbers of Christians who are coming into Syria. Only time will tell if Christians will once again be the dominant religion over Syria or another country that destroys the children of God.
