Encyclopedia > Christopher Morris (photographer)

Christopher Morris (born 1958) is an American photojournalist, best known for his war photographs. Year 1958 (MCMLVIII) was a common year starting on Wednesday (link will display full calendar) of the Gregorian calendar. ...

Morris was born in California and is currently based in New York. During the past 20 years most of his work has concentrated on war. Some of the wars he has photographed were the US invasion of Iraq, the drug war in Colombia, the Persian Gulf war, the wars in Afghanistan, Somilia, Yugoslavia, and Chechnya. He has documented more than 18 foreign conflicts. He has documented the presidency of George W. Bush for Time. He is one of the founding members of the VII Photo Agency. George Walker Bush (born July 6, 1946) is the 43rd and current President of the United States, inaugurated on January 20, 2001. ... Time (whose trademark is capitalized TIME) is a weekly American newsmagazine, similar to Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report. ... // VII Photo Agency VII derives its name from the number of photojournalists who, in September 2001, founded this collectively owned agency. ...

In recent years, Morris has taken his camera stateside, the results of which were published in "My America" by Steidl in 2006. Christopher Morris’s My America was produced while on assignment for TIME magazine covering the first and now second administrations of U.S. President George W. Bush. Morris describes My America as his personal journey into a Republican America. Through portraits and landscapes, Morris hopes that the viewer "sees what he saw and feels what he felt-a nation that has wrapped its eyes so tightly in red, white, and blue that it has gone blind." My America is the first monograph of Morris’s work.

Morris has received a multitude of awards for his work, including the Robert Capa Gold Medal award, The Olivier Rebbot award and the Feature Photography award from the Overseas Press Club; the Magazine Photographer of the Year award from the University of Missouri School of Journalism; Two Infinity Photojournalist awards from the International Center of Photography, New York; the Visa d'Or award; and numerous World Press Photo Awards.
