Professor Thomas Christopher Smout CBE, FBA, FRSE, (Born 1933) has been the Historiographer Royal in Scotland since 1993 and is Professor Emeritus in History at St Andrews University. Professor Smout was educated at The Leys School and Clare College, University of Cambridge. He taught at the University of Edinburgh Department of Economic History. He was an Assistant Lecturer 1959-1962, Lecturer 1962-1964, and Reader 1964-1970 before being appointed as Professor of Economic History in 1970. From 1980 to 1991, he was Professor of Scottish History at St Andrews University and he has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde since 1991. Smout has also served as Director of the St John's House Centre for Advanced Historical Studies 1992-1997, Director of the Institute for Environmental History since 1992, Deputy Chairman of Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) 1991-1997, and on the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts and the Trustees of the National Museums of Scotland.
