A chrysalis [Latin chrýsallis, from Greek khrusallis, khrusallid-, gold-colored pupa of a butterfly, from khrus-, chryso-.] is a type of pupa, a protective case within which an insect undergoes metamorphosis from a larva into the adult form. This term typically designates the pupae of butterfly species, and sometimes also moth species.
