From its early inception in 1990, Chuang Yi Publishing positioned itself as a company specializing in manga (Japanese comic book) and comic magazine publication, a medium of expression then generally disparged by most Singaporeans. The company's main objective was to expose the local populace to this storytelling art form, having recognized its popularity in a number of Asian countries like Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and its potential to take off with equal fervor in a similar market such as Singapore.

Over the years, Chuang Yi Publishing made gradual but definite steps towards its goal of promoting a “manga culture". Significant response to several of her flagship titles like Dragonball, Slam Dunk , convinced the company that both manga and comics could carve a niche for themselves in local reading tastes. To further fuel this uptrend, artists were specially invited over to Singapore to grace local book events and autograph sessions.
