Today, Guite is discovering a whole new world of rules behind bars after a Montreal jury convicted him on five counts of fraud, a verdict expected to give the 62-year-old something like three to five years in prison when he is sentenced tomorrow.
Guite's conviction adds another spectacular chapter to the career of the man AdScam commissioner Justice John Gomery called a "likeable scamp," a power-happy bureaucrat once asked to take the honor salute at the RCMP musical ride after helping the Mounties to funnel over $300,000 of their own sponsorship money through a private account.
Second, Guite is only the third person charged and convicted in connection with the sponsorship scandal, a far-reaching tangle of corruption, kickbacks and fraud involving $350 million of public funds, thousands of federal contracts, and dozens of other players.
