Chung Ju-yung (b. Nov. 25, 1915, Tongchon, Korea—d. March 21, 2001, Seoul, ROK.), was the founder of the giant Hyundai group of corporations in the Republic of Korea. Born of humble background, he became an inventor, industrialist, visionary businessman, benefactor of hospitals, and attempted presidential candidate, but billionaire Chung was better known to the west as the richest man in Korea until the late 1990s; and as the man who single-handedly kickstarted the rebirth of the late 20th century Korean economy.
