Church Hill is a town located in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 530.


Geography

Church Hill is located at 39°8'40" North, 75°59'6" West (39.144441, _75.984869)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 530 people, 210 households, and 139 families residing in the town. The population density is 401.2/km² (1,031.5/mi²). There are 226 housing units at an average density of 171.1/km² (439.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 76.79% White, 21.70% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 2.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 210 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% are married couples living together, 15.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% are non-families. 27.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.03.


In the town the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 83.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.8 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $48,250, and the median income for a family is $51,875. Males have a median income of $32,857 versus $26,964 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,487. 12.9% of the population and 11.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.4% of those under the age of 18 and 12.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Tradition holds that the bricks used to construct St. Luke’s Church were unloaded near the mill after their transportation from England.
The town is best known today perhaps for its Church Hill Theatre, located in a converted 1930s movie house.
