It occupied about 18,000 square kilometres along the east bank of the Volga River, about sixty kilometres west of the river's confluence with the Kama River and some 700 kilometres east of Moscow. 	The Chuvash ancestors were tribes of ancient Bulgars and Suars that resided in the Northern Caucasus in the 5th to the 8th centuries.
	The Chuvash nationality was formed from the part of the Bulgar population that did not adopt Islam in the 10th century.
