Chytridiomycota is a division of the Fungi kingdom and contains only one class, Chytridiomycetes. The name refers to the chytridium (from the Greek, chytridion, meaning "little pot"): the structure containing unreleased spores. In older classifications, chytrid orders (except the recently established Neocallimasticales and Spizellomycetales) were placed in the Class Phycomycetes under the Subdivision Myxomycophyta of the Division Fungi. Also, in an older and more restricted sense (not used here), the term "chytrids" referred just to those fungi in the order Chytridiales. The chytrids are the most primitive of the fungi and are mostly saprobic (degrading chitin and keratin). Many chytrids are aquatic (mostly found in freshwater). There are approximately 1,000 chytrid species, in 127 genera, distributed among 5 orders. Both zoospores and gametes of the chytrids are mobile by their flagella, one whiplash per individual. The thalli are coenocytic and usually form no true mycelium (having rhizoids instead). Some species are unicellular. One group, the Chytridiomycota, is related to the remainder of the true fungi, while the other group, the Oömycota, is unrelated to the fungi, and is instead more closely related to the diatoms and brown algae.
Both the Oömycota and the Chytridiomycota have in the past been placed with the Fungi, and were referred to as the “lower” fungi, and they have both been removed from the fungi, to be placed with the Protista.
The Chytridiomycota and the Oömycota are primarily aquatic, the former often referred to as Chytrids (and sometimes as water molds), and the latter as oömycetes or water molds.

Chytridiomycota is paraphyletic and the basal taxon in fungi
Members of Chytridiomycota are considered to be the basal lineage of fungi since, like metazoans, they use glycogen to store energy and have flagellated spores (zoospores) but, like other fungi, they have chitinous cell walls, flattened mitochondrial cristae, and use the AAA lysine synthesis pathway [39,40].
Chytridiomycota is paraphyletic in the combined RPB1 and RPB2 phylogeny and consists of two major lineages; one being the Blastocladiales, the other including Chytridiales-Spizellomycetales-Monoblepharidales with Neocallimasticales as an outlier (Figure 3).
