Cibao is a sub-region of the Dominican Republic, located at the geographical center of the country. The Taino word Cibao, meaning "rocky" or "place of rocks", was originally applied to the Cordillera Central, known as "Montes Cibao." The valley at the foot of these mountains was known as Cibao during the time of the Spanish Conquest. The bounty of the Cibao valley is proverbial. It is the most fertile and productive region of the isle. The people of the region are pleasant and hospitable. This is a region of great natural blessings. It provides food for the rest of the country. Its mineral resources include gold, iron, nickel among others.

The valley is a geographical unit, but also a linguistic and psychological unit. The people of Cibao speak and think similarly throughout the region.
