Cienciano del Cuzco is a small Football (soccer) club from Cuzco, Peru. The club was founded in 1901, originally the team of the faculty of Science of the University of Cuzco (Ciencias meaning science in spanish) the club has seen a lot of ups and downs through its existence. It gained worldwide recognition after defeating River Plate from Argentina in the finals of the 2003 Copa Sudamericana. Copa Sudamericana

In 2003 Cienciano experienced a true cinderella story, qualifying for the first time to the Copa Sudamericana, it went through every knockout round as the underdog defeating much stronger teams such as Club Deportivo Universidad Católica, Atletico Nacional (once Copa Libertadores champion) and Santos (twice Copa Libertadores champion), to get to the finals. Once at the finals they faced one of the biggest teams in South American football, River Plate of Argentina (twice Copa Libertadores champion). After a 3-3 draw in Argentina, Cienciano went on to win 1-0 on their home game in Peru with a goal by paraguayan defender Carlos Lugo. This was the first International championship for a Peruvian team in history, only two other Peruvian teams had advanced to the finals of an inernational tournament, the Copa Libertadores (Universitario de Deportes in 1972, and Sporting Cristal in 1997) only to be defeated. What is even more amazing is that Cienciano had never been the Peruvian national champion (they did win one tournament in 2001 but lost the title of national champions by a penalty shootout to the winner of the second tournament, Alianza Lima, held in 2001). It is also worth mentioning that the Copa Sudamericana was originally created to represent in South America what the UEFA Cup represents in Europe. Mainly a tournament for the 4-5th place fishiners of their domestic league; but since this was only its second edition, qualifying to the tournament was still taking form and as a result the top teams from each country entered the cup, making it much more competitive. After winning the Sudamericana cup, Cienciano went on to play against Boca Juniors another South American giant at the Recopa Sudamericana, this being just one match that faced the winner of both South American Cups: the Copa Sudamericana and the Copa Libertadores.
