Cinelerra was first released August 1, 2002, and was based in part on an earlier product known as Broadcast 2000. Broadcast 2000 was withdrawn by Heroine Virtual in September 2001; Heroine Virtual cited legal liability concerns in the wake of litigation from the RIAA and MPAA and the costs involved in high-end video production. Cinelerra is sometimes criticized for requiring too much computing power to run. Its authors counter that it is a professional program and that there are alternative programs for amateurs.

The Community Version

Heroine Virtual generates a new release of Cinelerra every 6 months or so (see the History section below). The release generally consists of releaseing pre-compile RPM packages specific to current version of Fedora Core Linux along with the source code. Any bugs and usability issues found and or resolved by the community that are submitted to Heroine Virtual often result in no response, and it is not until the next release that there is any indication that Heroine Virtual takes these changes on board. Because of both the latency in development, and also the distribution-specific nature of the release, a group of open-source developer decided to create their own version of cinelerra, referred to as Cinelerra-CV (where CV stands for 'Community Version').

Cinelerra-CV serves the purpose of allowing would-be contributors to contribute to a open repository where each and every development of the code by the community can be viewed by everyone. Along with this, mailing lists, and an IRC channel exists where more experienced users and developers can provide support to the less experienced users, and general discussions can take place amoung the community of developers about the technicalities of certain issues. Cinelerra-CV also generate a wider range of packages for a number of different distributions, and the compilation system is considerably different. (System libraries are used extensively, and the autoconf/automake program is used to configure the compilation system.)

Although Cinelerra-CV may technically be called a fork, the relationship between Heroine Virtual and Cinelerra-CV is still rather friendly. Heroine Virtual at times contributes to some of the discussions on the mailing lists, and takes in many of the changes that occur in the repository. That Heroine Virtual is not upset by the fork can be concluded from a few paragraphs on their site, (take on 19-July-2006) that state:

What you'll find here is the heroinewarrior version of Cinelerra. This is the version that supports what we need to do at Heroine Virtual Ltd. and is the same tree that was started in 1997. As time passes and new students come and go from the Linux scene, new forks of Cinelerra emerge that are more suited to the community but not what Heroine Virtual Ltd. needs. Today you'll probably find the cinelerra.org fork more useful.

They allow certain parts of our fork into their fork while contributing anything they want while we allow certain parts of their fork into our fork while contributing anything we want.

The versioning of Cinelerra-CV follows that or Heroine Virtual in that after Heroine Virtual produces a release, Cinelerra-CV examines the changes introduced by the new version of Heroine Virtual, and merges them in with their version. The text, "CV" is appended to the end of the version id string to indicate the community version. ( i.e. after the 2.1 merger, the CV version is labelled 2.1CV )

Notable features

Cinelerra includes support for very high-fidelity audio and video: it processes audio using 64 bits of precision, and can work in both RGBA and YUVA color spaces, using floating-point and 16-bit integer representations, respectively. (The "A" in both color space notations stands for alpha channel.) It is resolution and frame rate-independent, meaning that it can support video of any speed and size. The RGB color model utilizes the additive model in which red, green, and blue light are combined in various ways to create other colors. ... Example of U-V color plane, Y value = 0. ... A comparison of RGB and CMYK color spaces. ... In computer graphics, alpha compositing is often useful to render image elements in separate passes, and then combine the resulting multiple 2D images into a single, final image in a process called compositing. ... Display standards comparison The display resolution of a digital television or computer display can be an ambiguous term especially as displayed resolution is controlled by different factors in picture-tube (CRT) and flat panel or projection displays using fixed picture-element (pixel) arrays. ... Frame rate, or frame frequency, is the measurement of how quickly an imaging device produces unique consecutive images called frames. ...

Other features may be found on its features list.

Cinelerra interface

Cinelerra's interface is similar to that of other nonlinear video-editing systems, such as Adobe Premiere Pro; however, because it includes a compositing engine, it may also be likened to compositing software such as Adobe After Effects or Shake. The user is presented with four screens: Adobe Premiere Pro, produced by Adobe is a realtime, timeline based video editing software targeted at prosumer and professional video editors. ... Adobe After Effects is a digital motion graphics and compositing software developed by Adobe Systems. ... Shake is an image compositing package used in the post-production industry. ...

  2. the viewer, which gives the user a method of scrubbing through footage;
  3. the resource window, which presents the user with a view of all audio and video resources in the project, as well as available audio and video effects and transitions; and
  4. the compositor, which presents the user with a view of the final project as it would look when rendered. The compositor is interactive in that it allows the user to adjust the positions of video objects; it also updates in response to user input.

Cinelerra's interface is frequently criticized because it does not conform to either GNOME or KDE Human Interface Guidelines. Cinelerra usage and awards

Cinelerra has gained ground among some GNU/Linux enthusiasts looking for a native GNU/Linux video editing system. Professional use is mostly promoted by Linux Media Arts, who sell Cinelerra as part of an integrated hardware and software package for video production.

At the National Association of Broadcasters' 2004 Electronic Media Show, Cinelerra was awarded Bob Turner's "MAKING THE CUT" award. The award is given to "the best and most exciting postproduction products seen at the convention" [1].
