Map of Algeria showing Constantine province

Constantine or Qustantînah is a city and wilaya in north-east Algeria, slightly inland. It has a population of about 350,000, making it the third largest city in the country (after Algiers and Oran). It is named for Constantine I of the Roman Empire, who caused the city to be rebuilt; previously, its name had been Cirta. The city is framed by a deep ravine and has a dramatic appearance. The city is very picturesque with a number of bridges and a viaduct crossing the ravine. Constantine is also home to the tomb of the Algerian national hero Abd al-Qadir al-Jazairi. Cirta was first an important Carthaginian settlement (named SARIM BATIM?), then a town of the Numidian Massyli, and subsequently the capital where the ancient kings, Syphax (king of the Massaesyli), Masinissa, Micipsa, Adherbal, and others, lived and built many fine buildings of mud brick in the later third and second century BC.
The city of Cirta is a fortress perched high on a diamond-shaped plateau, about 2,000 feet high, srrounded on three sides by a precipitous ravine, through which runs the river Ampsaga (Oued Rummel).
Cirta became the capital of Septimius Severus' new province of Numidia (203 AD), and a new stage in its construction and amplification began.
