The development of these cities was cut short by the invasion of the crusaders in the 1200s, the development of new political and social organisations, and the introduction of a new culture.
City status was granted to 30 inhabited places in a period of 20 years.

Stockholm and Calmar (Kalmar) are thought to have been members of the Hansa for short periods, because in some sources they are mentioned as Hanseatic towns, but it could also be because the Hansa had offices there.
