Citronellal is actually present at higher levels in the Java type.
Because of its high citronellal content (up to 50% of the total volume), and geraniol (up to 45% of the total volume), it's often used as a starting point for perfume materials which are isolated or fractionated from the oil.
Citronellal and geraniol are two of the most important and widely used perfume building blocks.
Insect repellent - Patent 5298250 (3637 words)
This reaction causes the cyclization of the citronellal to produce an impure mixture of 40-45% cis and trans p-menthane-3,8-diols and is essentially the method disclosed in J. Am.
It is believed that by removing the unreacted citronellal and other low boiling point compounds, synergism between the p-menthane-3,8-diols and these acetals was able to be observed as the low boiling point compounds did not interfere by displacing the p-menthane-3,8-diols and/or acetals from the repellent air layer formed immediately above the skin.
One might therefore expect that a mixture of citronellal and p-menthane-3,8-diols would have an enhanced repellency but this was found not to be the case.
