Citrus County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 118,085. Its county seat is Inverness, Florida6.

History

Citrus County was created in 1887. It was named for the county's citrus trees and the citrus industry.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,002 km˛ (773 mi˛). 1,512 km˛ (584 mi˛) of it is land and 490 km˛ (189 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 24.49% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 118,085 people, 52,634 households, and 36,317 families residing in the county. The population density is 78/km˛ (202/mi˛). There are 62,204 housing units at an average density of 41/km˛ (106/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 95.05% White, 2.36% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 2.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 52,634 households out of which 19.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 7.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.00% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.60.


In the county the population is spread out with 17.20% under the age of 18, 4.60% from 18 to 24, 19.10% from 25 to 44, 26.90% from 45 to 64, and 32.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 53 years. For every 100 females there are 92.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.60 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $31,001, and the median income for a family is $36,711. Males have a median income of $28,091 versus $21,408 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,585. 11.70% of the population and 8.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.10% of those under the age of 18 and 7.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Although little citrus is now grown in the region, owing to changes in climate, Senator David Levy Yulee did operate a plantation in the vicinity of Homosassa, and a variety of sweet orange was once cultivated by that name.
Citrus County, which was established in 1887, has appropriately dubbed itself the "Nature Coast." Much of its territory is preserved in state forests and parks, including "Nature's Fish Bowl" Homosassa Springs, Lake Tsala Apopka, the manatee sanctuaries at Crystal River, and the site of Seminole War-era Ft. Cooper.
The county commissioners originally met at a local church, while court functions were conducted in the Moffatt and Gaffney residences, the latter rented for the sum of $19 per month.

Citrus County’s 10 leading causes of death are the same as for the state, though respiratory disease ranks as the third leading cause of death in Citrus County, while it is fourth in the state.
The primary causes of premature mortality in Citrus County are cancer and heart disease, accounting for 13,705 YPLL, or 52.2 percent of YPLL due to the leading causes of death.
