The Columbus City Attorney is an election position with a 4 year term. The current City Attorney, Richard C. Pfeiffer was appointed by Columbus City Council in January 2003 to fill the vacant City Attorney position. Subsequently, in November 2003 he was elected to finish the unexpired term of his predecessor, and in November 2005 was elected to a full four-year term that ends December 31, 2009.

From traffic tickets to civil law suits to giving legal advice for other departments, it falls within the realm of the City Attorney. Because of this, the is divided up into 5 main divisions with most having their own more focused sections. These divisions are Civil, Claims, Real Estate and Prosecution, Police Legal Advisor.
