The urban part of the city consists of a ribbon of close or contiguous towns which lie on the rail and road link between Penrith (a western suburb of Sydney) and Lithgow (a coal mining town). The Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia, roughly 100 kilometres west of Sydney, are a range of sandstone "mountains" that reach to at least 1190 metres above sea level (in the Lithgow area).
The Blue Mountains lie in the local government areas of the City of Blue Mountains, the City of Hawkesbury, the City of Lithgow and Oberon.
The Blue Mountains were thought to be impenetrable by the early settlers of Sydney, and were not crossed until 1813, by Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson.

It lies at Lat: 33:42:41S (-33.7114) Lon: 150:18:14E (150.3039) on the Great Western Highway 110 kilometres west of Sydney and is well known for spectacular mountain views and extensive bush and nature walks in the surrounding Blue Mountains range.
The Darks are reputed to have built a refuge in the Grose Valley to the north of Katoomba.
