History
The school's history goes back to the early 1950s, when it was founded by way of a donation from the Catherine Needham Foundation, a local charitable trust set up in memory of Lady Catherine Needham. The 1950s was the decade spanning the years 1950 to 1959. ...
The school was originally called Needham's Grammar School, and when first opened, it had approx. 790 pupils attending. It was renamed in the mid 1980's to City of Ely College, under the direction of the Head teacher, Mr Roger Daw. Headmaster redirects here. ...
Layout The school is split into 4 buildings, each housing different areas of the school's curriculum: Needham's Building - The original school building, which now houses the Mathematics, English, Design Technology and Modern Foreign Languages Units. Littleport Building - This is the newest area, housing History, Geography, Art and PSHE. Bedford Block - The former home of the Ely High School for Girls until 1980, this is now the home to Physical Education, Science, ICT and the Main School Library. Downham Building - Home of the Business and Enterpise Unit, Social Sciences, and Special Services, who combine their own learning with that of the neighbouring Highfield Special School, whose pupils attend three times a week for mainstream integration.
Current Management The principal of the school since 2003 has been Mr Ian Gartshore. He currently manages the whole school, and oversaw the first phase of its integration as a Business and Enterprise College under the national Specialist schools programme. The specialist schools programme is a UK government programme which encourages secondary schools to specialise in certain areas to boost acheivement. ...
