The City of Greater Bendigo is a Local Government Area in Victoria, Australia. It is located in the north_western part of the state. It has an area of 3,048 square kilometres. In 2001 it had a population of 87,000.

The area was originally known as Bendigo's Creek, named for an employee on a local property who was nicknamed "Bendigo" after the famous English prize fighter William "Bendigo" Thompson.
There is a medium security gaol which is projected to close in late 2005.
Bendigo is about 140 km (about 105 miles) or two hours drive by car from Melbourne with most of the journey being on freeway style roads.
