Wodonga City Council is a Local Government Area in Victoria, Australia, located in the north-eastern part of the state. It has an area of 432 square kilometres and in 2001 it had a population of 33,000. Its floral and fauna emblems are Pink heath and the Leadbeater's Possum respectively. Wodonga was first surveyed in 1852 and proclaimed the town of Belvoir in the same year. In 1876 the government of the colony of Port Philip granted a request from the people of the area for their district to be separated from the Yackandandah Shire. Nearly one hundred years later in 1973 Wodonga was proclaimed a city by the Governor of Victoria Sir Rohan Delacombe and the Shire of Wodonga was renamed the Rural City of Wodonga. In 1994 was again renamed, becoming Wodonga Rural City Council, but one year later stopped using the word “Rural” except when legally required.
