Hartford Civic Center Mall, located in Hartford, Connecticut, was a shopping mall built in the 1970s as an urban redevelopment project. It contained small shops such as a Whalers gift shop, Sam Goody, and Foot Locker. Called the "Bunker" by its critics, the mall was unsuccessful, and many of its tenants left in the 1990s. In 2004 Northland Investment Corporation, the State of Connecticut, the City of Hartford, and Aetna began working together to rejuvenate the Hartford Civic Center Mall complex. The project includes the construction of a new 36-story tower that will contain 262 luxury apartments, plus a block which will contain 45,000 square feet of retail space and 90,000 square feet of office space. These new residents and shops will be located right next to the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which is still open and is the home of the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack, UCONN Basketball, and hundreds of concerts and trade shows each year. Originally located adjacent to a shopping mall (Civic Center Mall, which was demolished in 2004), it was originally built in 1975 and consists of two facilities: the Veterans Memorial Coliseum and the Exhibition Center.
It was also the home of the Hartford Whalers of the NHL from 1979-1997 and the New England Blizzard of the ABL from 1996-1998, and hosted occasional Boston Celtics home games from 1975-1995.
Though the Hartford Whalers moved to North Carolina in 1997 to become the Carolina Hurricanes, the Coliseum still honors the numbers of six former Whalers with jersey retirement banners.
