In the end, Lech Kaczyński (PiS) won the second round of the presidential election on 23 October 2005 with 54.0% of the vote, ahead of Donald Tusk, the PO candidate. This coalition fell apart in 2007 amid corruption scandals and internal leadership disputes. These events led to the new elections.
