It is said to have originated from Eric the Black, King of the Isle of Man, an island located in the Irish Sea at the geographical centre of the British Isles. Although it is not part of the United Kingdom, it is a Crown dependency. Eric the Black is said to have shipwrecked on Lewis Island, and to have had a son named Mauris there, from whom came the Morrisons. According to http://www.kloks.clara.co.uk/MORRISON.html "A long time ago abound 1214 a Norse ship sank in a heavy storm off the Scottish island of Lewis. On board the fated ship that night was Lauon, a young and beautiful Scottish noblewoman with her newly born son Gillemorrie. Her husband Olaf the Black commanded the ship but was unable to save the vessel and they and the crew were flung into the icy waters. Luck or perhaps fate floated a piece of driftwood to them which the three clung to and were miraculously swept to the rocky shore of Lewis, alive. When Lauon had married Olay in 1214 and bore him a son, Gillemorrie, the church declared their relationship as incestuous, since Lauon was a cousin of Olafs first wife. Bishop Reginald of the islands further nullified their marriage and rendered their son illegitimate. Life has a funny way of payback as when Gillemorrie became an adult he fell in love and married the last heiress of the Clan Igaa. She as her right owned and lived at Pabbay Castle on the nearby island of Harris. It was from this marriage that the Clan of Morrison thus sprang and how driftwood became their badge."

ClanMorrison (Gaelic: Clann MacGhille Mhuire or na Moireasdanaich) is a Scottish clan of the Highlands.
In the 17th century, Ay Mac Hormaid of ClanMorrison married the daughter of the Bishop of Caithness, a powerful Clan MacKay family, her dowry being the whole of Durness across the sea on the northwestern mainland.
The Morrisons of Aberdeenshire derive their name from the "Son of Maurice", believed to be a Norman lord given title to lands there by the Norman rulers of England to help control the border country and thus are not a highland clan but rather a lowland family.
