Encyclopedia > Clapping game

A clapping game is type of usually cooperative (ie non-competitive) game which is generally played by two players and involves clapping - but not necessarily in that order. the first clapping game was played in York by two brothers (who latterly married two sisters). Co-operation refers to the practice of people or greater entities working in common with commonly agreed-upon goals and possibly methods, instead of working separately in competition. ... Competition is the act of striving against others for the purpose of achieving gain, such as income, pride, amusement, or dominance. ... Tug of war is an easily organized, impromptu game that requires little equipment. ... A clap is the sound made by striking together two flat surfaces, as in the body parts of humans or animals. ...

The template of a standard clapping game is for the participants to clap each other's hand(s) or feet (or, in Serbia, heads), as well as perform other actitivies such as thigh slapping, shopping or times tables recital in a rhythmic fashion while attempting to walk in a circle. The clapping pattern is often improvised when not agreed to prior to the beginning of the hand clapping. The rhyme is very similar to a jump-rope rhyme. A jump-rope rhyme, or skipping-rope rhyme, is a rhyme chanted by children while jumping rope. ...

The clapping games

There are a variety of distinct clapping games, each of which is performed or played in various versions found in different areas and times and often according to ethnicity. For example Hello, Operator may be called Missy Susie or Lucy and may contain, omit, or vary verses or specific lines.

Hello, Sailor/Simple Miss Lucy

"Simple Miss Lucy" is "a provocative game that includes all kinds of sexual innuendos about boys and having sex with priests" and features "the linguistic play of double entendres and elisions created when certain syllables and words are just about to mean something sexual or scatological and then they suddenly shift into some benign reference," making "'Simple Miss Lucy' (an 'idiot' woman) easy to take advantage of" (Gaunt 2006, p.23):

(Chicken and Rice and Mashed Potatoes!)

I met my boyfriend at the candy store
He bought me ice cream, he bought me cake
He brought me home with a bellyache
I said, "Momma, Momma, I feel sick,
Call the doctor quick, quick, quick!"
"Doctor, Doctor, will I die?"
"Count to five, it's urgent!"
(1, 2, 3, 4, 5...)
"I'm alive but pregnant!"
See that house on toppa that hill?
That's where me and my boyfriend live.
Cookin' that chicken, burnin' that rice,
C'mon baby let's shoot some dice!

The first part (Uno, dos, siete) is done by both people linking their pinkies, but crossed. So, one person's left pinkie is with the other person's right, and so on. Each word, you cross the pinkies over and under. The next part (I said an east, a west) is done "individually". When "east" and "west" and said, each person puts their right hand on their left shoulder and their left hand on their right shoulder, respectively. The rest of the handclap is done by a fast tempo. When time comes for "quick, quick, quick", the clapping is quick so each word gets a clap, do it with both hands.

Charlie Brown Went Downtown I went downtown to see james Brown, he gave me a nickel, to buy a pickle, but the pickle was sour, so he gave me a flower, the flower was dead so this is what he said "Down down baby, down by the rollercoaster, sweet sweet baby, never going to let you go, Shimmee shimmee cocoa pop, shimmee shimmee pow. he gave me a bowl the bowl was crap so he gave me a smack A Slightly Different Version of Charlie Brown

I went downtown to see Charlie Brown.
He gave me a nickel so I bought myself a pickel.
The pickle was sour so I bought myself a flower.
The flower was dead so I said,
"Down, down, baby, down by the roller coaster."
Just because I kissed ya, doesn't mean I love ya."
Sugar, sugar cocoa puff! Sugar, sugar pow wow!"
Sugar, sugar cocoa puff! Sugar, sugar pow wow!"
