Clarabelle in Animation

Like many of the older Disney characters, Clarabelle Cow started as an unnamed character in the background. A cow with all the hallmarks of Clarabelle, including her enormous multi-studded udder, appeared in a pre-Mickey Mouse Disney film called Alice on the Farm (from Disney's Alice Comedies series) was perhaps Clarabelle's earliest appearance in film. In her first appearance, Alice on the Farm from 1926, Clarabelle was just a prop for one of Ub Iwerks' jokes having the character Julius the Cat trying to get milk from her. Her next appearance was a little closer to becoming Clarabelle. In Plane Crazy from 1928 she was given the name Carolyn, but the name was only used this one time. The name Clarabelle Cow did not occur until the fifth cartoon, The Shindig from 1930. Clarabelle appeared in a handful of cartoons until Symphony Hour from 1942 after which she was not seen in cartoons until Mickey's Christmas Carol from 1983 and Prince and the Pauper from 1990 (apart from a cameo in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in 1988). Both Clarabelle and Horace appeared in a large number of Mickey Mouse cartoons. In fact, both were major stars until the mid-1930s, with the cow slightly edging out her paramour in popularity. The two were, however, ultimately supplanted by Goofy; not because they were not interesting, but because Disney's staff in both cartoons and comics simply found Goofy more so.

Both Clarabelle and Horace Horsecollar had an uncanny ability to change from somewhat normal farmyard animals into anthropomorphized beings as necessary. Apparently Clarabelle was given a skirt originally to give a modicum of modesty to the rubbery bovine, serving to hide her enormous appendage. Clarabelle and Horace have been engaged since 1931.
