The Clarence River is located in the South Island of New Zealand. It is 160 kilometres in length


For its first 50 kilometres, the river runs in a generally southeastern direction. It then turns northeast, running down a long straight valley between the Inland and Seaward Kaikoura Ranges. At the end of the Seaward Kaikouras the river meanders through undulating hill country before draining into the Pacific Ocean near the town of Clarence.


A large part of the river is within the boundaries of the Molesworth Station.

The high country of New Zealand’s South Island, with its diversity of steep mountains, wide valleys, fast-flowing rivers, gorges and lakes was formed by combinations of seismic activity (plate tectonics) and successive periodic glaciation.
The only native mammal in New Zealand is a bat but we do have many species of skinks, geckos and insects such as the giant weta.
In contrast to the Lake Sumner area which is nearer the main divide of the Southern Alps, the Clarence River valley between the Seaward Kaikoura Range and the Inland Kaikoura Range lies further east away from the prevailing westerly rainfall.
