The building was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor (Christopher Wren's greatest pupil) and built (1711-1715) to house the Press's printing operations. The Clarendon Dock (167 words)
Number 1 Dock was the first major piece of infrastructure completed by The Belfast Harbour Commissioners' predecessors,the Ballast Board.It was constructed on their behalf by William Ritchie,the pioneer of shipbuilding in Belfast,during the period 1796 to 1800.It is the oldest dry dock in Ireland and was used on a commercial basis until the 1960's.
Number 2 dry dock was completed,together with the Clarendon building,in 1826 by Scottish engineer David Logan.The dock is still used by the Harbour Commissioners for the maintanance floating plant and machinery.
The Clarendon building was refurbished by the Harbour Commissioners in 1992 and is currently the headquarters of The Laganside Corporation The dry docks were refurbished in 2001.
