The Order of Poor Ladies, also known as the Poor Clares, the Poor Clare Nuns, the Clarisse, or the Minoresses is a Franciscan order founded by Saint Clare of Assisi. As of 2004 there are over 20,000 Poor Clare Sistersliving (http://www.poorclare.org/) in over 76 countries throughout the world.
Clarisse is extremely inquisitive and thoughtful, and she irritates Montag at first because she challenges his most deeply ingrained beliefs with her innocent questioning.
Nevertheless, Clarisse opens Montag’s eyes to the beauties of the natural world, and she recognizes that he is not like everyone else and has the potential to be a thinking individual like her.
Clarisse removes Montag’s mask of happiness, forcing him to confront the deeper reality of his situation, and his discomfort manifests itself in his involuntary bursts of spiteful, confused laughter.
