The Clark Handicap is a race for thoroughbred horses. It is the feature event of the Churchill Downs fall meet. The race is one and one-eighth miles on the dirt for a purse of $500,000. The race is open to horses three-years-old and up. The race has been run ever since 1875. The race was in honor of Colonel Lewis Clark who set up the Louisville Jockey Club and foudned Churchill Downs. The race had never been a Grade I but the Graded Stakes Committee announced it will be Grade I in 2006.
