Geography

Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,955 people, 6,978 households, and 5,024 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km˛ (26/mi˛). There are 8,100 housing units at an average density of 5/km˛ (12/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 64.49% White, 34.81% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.30% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
