Clarksburg is a town located in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,686.


History

Clarksburg was first settled in 1764 and was officially incorporated in 1798.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.3 km˛ (12.8 mi˛). 33.0 km˛ (12.8 mi˛) of it is land and 0.2 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.62% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,686 people, 659 households, and 512 families residing in the town. The population density is 51.0/km˛ (132.2/mi˛). There are 688 housing units at an average density of 20.8/km˛ (53.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 99.82% White, 0.06% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 659 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.0% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% are non-families. 18.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 2.89.


In the town the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.6 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $43,362, and the median income for a family is $47,411. Males have a median income of $33,750 versus $25,679 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,389. 6.6% of the population and 5.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Clarksburg was not an upstart, or fast-growing city, as defined by historian Daniel Boorstin in his classic study of American development; it never experienced the rapid population growth necessary to be considered a rival to other western settlements.
