Encyclopedia > Clatskanie River

The Clatskanie River is a tributary of the Columbia River, approximately 25 mi (40 km) long, in northwestern Oregon in the United States. It drains a timber_producing area in the foothills of the Coast Range NNW of Portland.

It rises in eastern Columbia County, approximately 10 mi (16 km) west of St. Helens. It flows generally NNW through the Clatsop State Forest, past Clatskanie. It enters a slough on the Columbia from the south approximately 5 mi (8 km) east of Westport.

The river is named for the Tlatskanai, an Athabascan tribe of Native Americans who lived in the valley of the nearby Nehalem River at the time of the arrival of Europeans in the early 19th century.
