Claude Bowers was an American Civil War historian of the 19th and 20th centuries. He wrote The Tragic Era, which was published in 1929. His book was one of the only written on the period of Reconstruction after the Civil War, which attracted a great amount of attention. He wrote about how there were corrupt politicians that were controlling the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, and how they were Northern "carpetbaggers" who invaded the South because of "political and economic plunder." He also degraded the Southerners who betrayed each other, and aided the North, and wrote about Afro-American efforts to Africanize the South and destroy its Caucasian civilization. His view, again, was one of the first on the traditional image of the United States after the Civil War.
