Claudia is a feminine given name. It is a variant of the masculine Claude, which in turn has its origin in the Roman Claudius, which was the name of the gens Claudia. It comes from a Roman family name which was derived from Latin claudus meaning "lame, crippled". This was the family name of several Roman emperors of the 1st century, including the emperor known simply as Claudius.
