The genus Onychodactylus contains the only known species of clawed salamanders. It is composed of only two species, both endemic to East Asia. The species Onychodactylus fischeri is found on the Korean peninsula, as well as in the Russian Far East and adjacent regions of China. The species Onychodactylus japonicus is found in Japan, on the islands of Shikoku and Honshū. Both species favor forested mountains near running water.
