Clay County (standard abbreviation: CY) is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 8,822. The county seat is at Clay Center. Its name is in honor of Henry Clay, famous American statesman, member of the United States Senate from Kentucky and United States Secretary of State in the 19th century.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,698 km˛ (655 mi˛). 1,668 km˛ (644 mi˛) of it is land and 30 km˛ (12 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.77% water.

Demographics

As of the census˛ of 2000, there are 8,822 people, 3,617 households, and 2,517 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km˛ (14/mi˛). There are 4,084 housing units at an average density of 2/km˛ (6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 97.72% White, 0.57% Black or African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 0.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,617 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.90% are married couples living together, 6.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% are non-families. 27.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.91.


In the county the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 23.90% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 20.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 99.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.60 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $33,965, and the median income for a family is $41,103. Males have a median income of $28,817 versus $17,760 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,939. 10.10% of the population and 6.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.60% of those under the age of 18 and 8.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
