Its name is in honor of Henry Clay, famous American statesman, member of the United States Senate from Kentucky and United States Secretary of State in the 19th century. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 671 km² (259 mi²). 612 km² (236 mi²) of it is land and 60 km² (23 mi²) of it (8.93%) is water. The Cumberland River flows through the center of the county from north to south, fed by the Obey River which flows through the city of Celina from its impoundment at the Dale Hollow Reservoir. The reservoir, known as Dale Hollow Lake, inundates much of the eastern part of the county.
