Clayton is a city located in Norton and Decatur counties in Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 66.


Geography

Clayton is located at 39°44'14" North, 100°10'37" West (39.737247, _100.176818)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 66 people, 27 households, and 18 families residing in the city. The population density is 59.3/km² (155.1/mi²). There are 37 housing units at an average density of 33.2/km² (87.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.48% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 27 households out of which 29.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.3% are married couples living together, 0.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 25.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.00.


In the city the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 3.0% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 33.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. Clayton was born in Bethel Township, Pennsylvania, on August 7, 1833, to John Clayton, a carpenter who kept an orchard, and Ann Clarke Clayton.
As governor, Clayton faced strident opposition from the state’s conservative political leaders who labeled him a “Radical Republican,” along with a serious outbreak of violence, aimed at African Americans and members of the Republican Party, led by the Ku Klux Klan during the presidential election in the fall of 1868.
Clayton and his faction, known locally as the “Minstrels,” came to dominate the party organization, securing recognition of the national Republican organization and commanding the federal patronage in the state.
