Clayton, originally named Salem, was platted in 1816 and grew rapidly until bypassed by the National Road and the railroad.
From 1906 until 1922, Clayton was a stop on the Dayton-Northern Traction Line, which connected Dayton with Union City and ran along Salem Pike.
