The area is named after the Clayton family that lived on Bedford Highway, Rockingham. The Shaw company developed land behind the Clayton family house. It was created as an upper middle class community, with its houses having certain architectural requirements, among which was a high percentage of brick. The Shaw company was one of the largest brick makers in Nova Scotia. Eventually, old Clayton Park, as it has come to be known, spread across Dunbrack Street into Clayton Park West.
