Martin Newell (born 1953), also known as "the Wild Man of Wivenhoe", is an English rock and roll musician, poet and author. He grew up in an army family in various parts of England and the Far East. During the 1980s he led a band called The Cleaners From Venus, who mostly released their work on cassettes (see Cassette culture) outside the traditional music distribution channels (in other words, independent music). He is better known to some as a poet and author; he has released several volumes of poetry (often in collaboration with James Dodds) and a memoir called This Little Ziggy, about his youth and his days in The Mighty Plod, a Colchester-based glam band in the 1970s. As the chief of Cleaners From Venus, he and cohorts recorded several albums on their own, and distributed them via self-produced cassettes that were chiefly available by mail.
Cleaners From Venus were distinguished from the usual lot because they specialized in extremely witty, cheery, and compact pop songs.
Cleaners From Venus couldn't be pigeonholed as revivalists, however, due to the '80s jangle of the guitars, and the expressively yearning qualities of Newell's vocals; the melodies were almost always infectious and bursting with harmonies.
CD Baby: THE CLEANERS FROM VENUS: Live in Japan (Osaka 1994) (309 words)
The CLEANERS were in top form and threw in some old CLEANERS classics as well as some acoustic trax along with the HOLLIESĀ“ "Bus Stop" as an encore.
The majority of the songs are from his Greatest Living Englishman solo album, which came out a year prior to this live set, which also include covers of the Hollies and Joe Brown.
The Cleaners from Venus in this CD include Capt. Sensible (Damned) and Dave Gregory (XTC).
