Clearwater is a city located in Sedgwick County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,178.

Geography

Clearwater is located at 37°30'20" North, 97°30'5" West (37.505646, _97.501516)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. Just north of town an interesting development can be found. A portion of the paved road 135th, 2 or 3 miles north of town, has been sinking considerably since the turn of the century. There is a rumor that some brave speed demons have caught some air off of this once flat road.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 2,178 people, 773 households, and 609 families residing in the city. The population density is 750.8/km² (1,942.7/mi²). There are 791 housing units at an average density of 272.7/km² (705.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.42% White, 0.28% African American, 1.24% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 773 households out of which 42.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.1% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.1% are non-families. 19.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the city the population is spread out with 31.7% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $50,694, and the median income for a family is $53,816. Males have a median income of $41,306 versus $28,348 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,286. 4.3% of the population and 3.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
