Encyclopedia > Clemson class destroyer

Clemson-class destroyers were commissioned by the United States Navy from 1919 to 1922, built by various shipyards.

The Clemson class was a redesign of the Wickes class. 156 ships were produced, some with alarming speed. Many were decommissioned in 1930. Nineteen were transferred to the Royal Navy in 1940 as part of the Destroyers for Bases Agreement where they became part of the Town class. Others were converted or upgraded and served through World War II.
